Chiropractic treatment is appropriate for a wide variety of injuries and health complaints. The information here will guide you in understanding these conditions and how Chiropractic can help.

Chiropractic Information and Conditions Treated

Whiplash

Whiplash neck injuries are among the fastest growing health problems today. The ever increasing number of automobiles rolling onto our congested streets and highways, the high speed of our freeway system, power brakes, and powerful engines all contribute to the growing frequency of the type of accident that can result in a whiplash neck injury.
The research crash council of the USAF has demonstrated that the normal neck can withstand a forward snapping of 50 times the force of gravity before producing major injury, whereas a backward snapping acceleration of only 5 times the force of gravity can be tolerated. And since an auto traveling only 25 miles an hour creates a force exceeding 3,400 pounds, the impact of a crash at this speed will exert several tons of force on the victim's neck.

A whiplash neck injury occurs as the result of a sudden backward and forward whipping movement of the neck. This sudden, forceful movement often stretches or sprains the ligaments and muscles that hold the spinal segments within a critical range of movement or position. Failure of the holding ligaments to support the spine allows the spinal segments to become displaced, thus altering the normal mechanical balance of the spine. This increased stress results in eventual degenerative disease of the disc with spur formation and the spurs will occlude the spinal nerve openings.

It is important to note that virtually every person involved in a moving vehicle accident suffers a whiplash injury to some degree. Its symptoms are not always readily clear . . . some individuals experience no pain or discomfort for weeks following an accident . . . and it is advisable to seek competent whiplash injury diagnosis following any auto accident. Left untreated, a whiplash injury can eventually open a veritable Pandora's Box of painful chronic health problems that can eventually lead to a lifetime of misery.

Headaches

Stress. Tension. Neck pain. Headache. This is the common journey for more than 50 million Americans suffering from "cephalgia" or headaches. The key to treating any condition is the proper diagnosis of that condition. To properly diagnose your headache, you and your doctor will work as a team. Some of the important characteristics to address are frequency (how often you experience headaches), severity (the rating of pain on a scale of one to ten with ten being the highest level of pain), the location of your headache (one side, both sides, behind the eyes, starts in the neck, etc.), and other factors like seeing flashes of light, or associated nausea and/or vomiting.

A research study conducted by Duke University reported that chiropractic adjustments/treatment in the cervical (neck area) resulted in immediate improvement of cervicogenic headaches. Also, when compared to soft-tissue therapies (massage), a course of chiropractic adjustments resulted in sustained improvement in headache frequency and severity. If you or someone you know is suffering from headaches, a complete Chiropractic evaluation may be the first step to freedom from pain.

Chronic Neck Pain

Your neck was created with a built-in shock absorber called a curve or lordosis. This was formed by design because the curve acts like a spring and absorbs the shock of your head resting on your neck. When your neck loses its curve, the ligaments supporting your neck become stretched and lose their ability to maintain the curve. This can occur from a motor vehicle accident, chronic poor posture, or uncorrected spinal subluxation complexes.

Once your neck has lost its normal curve, your neck and shoulder muscles attempt to hold your head in the proper position. Unfortunately, they were not created for this and they tire easily. Unless you decide to let your head drop into your lap, your neck muscles will have to continue holding up your head long after becoming fatigued. That's precisely when muscle spasm occurs, and tightness begins in your neck and shoulders. If you're experiencing neck pain, ask your doctor of Chiropractic to assist you in restoring your neck's normal curvature.

Sciatic and Leg Pain

Your sciatic nerve is the longest and largest nerve in your body. It begins in your lower back as five smaller nerves joining together and extends to your pelvis, thigh, knee, calf, ankle, foot, and toes. When this large nerve becomes inflamed the condition is called sciatica and the pain can be intense! The pain may follow the path of your nervedown the back of your legs and thighs, down to your ankle, foot and toesbut it can also radiate to your back! Along with pain there may be burning, pins and needles, tingling, prickling, crawling sensations or tenderness. The leg may also feel numb. Although sciatica pain is usually in the back of the legs or thighs, in some people it can be in the front or side of the legs or even in the hips. For some, the pain is in both legs.

A spinal misalignment, or subluxation, causes disc and nerve pressure and may stress the entire body. Many sciatic sufferers have experienced dramatic relief after chiropractic care. Many sufferers of sciatica and leg pain have found that Chiropractic was superior to traction and pain injections, often saving them from spinal surgery. If you have sciatica, from whatever cause, a chiropractic spinal adjustment is needed to remove pressure on your nerves, rebalance your spine, take stress off your discs and permit your body's muscles, glands and tissues to function in a more balanced manner.

"Pinched" Nerves

"Pinched" nerves could happen nearly anywhere and affect nerves that go to your arms, fingers, wrists, neck, head, back, shoulders, head, legs, muscles, and internal organs. "Pinched" nerves can affect your health, posture, vitality, resistance to disease, and even your emotional health. Even though there may be no actual "pinching" of the nerve going on, it can feel like something is being pinched there. Your nerves connect you to the world. Without them you couldn't see, hear, touch, taste, or smell or feel hot, cold, pleasure or pain. Without nerves no muscles could move, no messages could come in and no messages could go out. Nerve messages help regulate your body activities such as breathing, heartbeat, digestion, excretion, blood pressure, and immune system so they respond to germs, changes in temperature and all kinds of stress.

If your nerves are "pinched" or "impinged" the flow of messages can be interfered with and your body can become diseased or weakened. Lowered resistance to disease, infection, colds, flu, allergies, ulcers, constipation, diarrhea, asthma, fevers, headaches, seizures, bed-wetting, colds, hearing, balance or visual disturbances and many other health problems have been related to an unhealthy nervous system. "Pinched" nerves do not go away by themselves. No amount of painkillers or muscle relaxants can fix them. Only doctors of Chiropractic are able to analyze your spinal column for "pinched" nerves or vertebral subluxations and use spinal adjustment techniques to gently realign your spine, release your internal stress and free you from your "pinched" nerves.

Quality of Life

Doctors of Chiropractic are specially trained to locate and remove a small, often painless distortion in your spine known as a vertebral subluxation complex. Subluxations can harm your nerves, muscles, bones, immune system, energy level and overall physical and emotional health.

When your subluxations are corrected your entire being may be affected. That's because subluxations affect your entire bodynot only individual parts. Your Chiropractor's care is not limited to making specific parts of your body function better but designed to help your entire being (mind/body complex) function better. What will Chiropractic do for the quality of your life? Will it be improved physical health? Greater emotional health? More energy? Better sleep? Will you have less disease, take less medicine and enjoy life more? Why not try Chiropractic and see for yourself!

Pregnancy

If you are pregnant, one of the best things you can do for yourself and your baby is see a doctor of Chiropractic. Chiropractic care provides so many things a pregnant body needs: a flexible and balanced spine, hips and pelvis; internal organs without postural stress and freedom from nerve stressall essential for a healthy pregnancy and delivery. In shortalong with a better diet, exercise, and avoiding drugs, alcohol, and cigarettesChiropractic care should be an essential part of a pregnant woman's health care regimen. A pregnant woman needs to have her body as healthy and strong as possible in order to handle the rigors of pregnancy and childbirth.

Chiropractic care will help ensure that all body systems, especially the reproductive system including the uterus, ovaries and related organs and structures so essential for a healthy pregnancy, function properly. If the body structure is causing the slightest nerve interference to these systems it could adversely affect the mother and the developing fetus.

Children and Chiropractic

All parents want to maximize their children's health, and they should take a proactive approach in keeping children healthy. One major strategy you can implement as a parent who wants what's best for a child is to understand that your child's brain and nervous system controls and coordinates every function of the body, including the immune system, biochemistry, and hormones. Your child's nervous system also controls how the body heals and regulates. Thus, you want to make sure that your childs spine and nervous system are developing and functioning properly; in our view, the best educated and trained expert to determine this is a doctor of Chiropractic.

After taking a proper history about your child and doing a thorough evaluation, a doctor of chiropractic wi11 determine the extent of your child's interference in the nervous system, which is called a subluxation, a minor misalignment of the vertebrae. All children, from birth onward, should be checked on a regular basis to determine whether there are spinal postural alterations, which can negatively affect the child's nervous system and the way the child's body heals and regulates.

Ear Infections and Chiropractic

Over 110 million prescriptions for antibiotics were written last year. Experts say that half were unnecessary or ineffective. That means approximately 55 million prescriptions were taken, often times by our children to treat ear infections, which were unfortunately useless! Research is beginning to reveal the ineffectiveness of antibiotics to treat acute otitis media (ear infection). In fact, the New England Journal of Medicine reported, "Only 1 in 8 children with ear infections benefit from antibiotics".

Many studies have shown the strong connection between neuromusculoskeletal dysfunction of the Eustachian tube (a tube that "drains" the ear) and middle ear infections. Nerve interference caused by vertebral subluxations in the upper part of the neck can lead to improper functioning of the Eustachian tube. Specific Chiropractic spinal adjustments reduce the nerve interference, improving the function of the Eustachian tube, and allow the middle ear to heal naturally.
